about
Michael Jackson (born November 16th 1966) is a British artist living in Dorset, England. His work, spanning two decades, began with a continuous eight year intensive study of a single beach in Wales which then evolved into the creation of a distinctive cameraless darkroom aesthetic using controlled light often depicting geometric forms that represent a deep response to a subject. His methods rely totally on traditional chemical darkroom processes using the minimal amount of equipment and explore the artistic properties of silver gelatin photographic paper.
Images are often made and completed without Jackson being able to see any marks made until the final stage of development, where the piece as a whole is revealed. He uses a form of afterimage memory to construct his work and often draws guidelines onto the paper to produce accurate placement.
Jackson describes his work as a collective response to any given subject, with each mark made adding to the puzzle, eventually ending with a completed emotion or thought. His approach to working with silver gelatin paper is often described as sculptural and Jackson purposefully engages in sculptural references to express his emotions and experiences.
He was the winner of the Chris Beetles Award in 2013 and became a Hasselblad Masters Award finalist three times in 2008, 2009 and 2012.
In 2017 his luminogram work was added to the 21st Editions Collection and published by 21st Editions in Minnesota. His book 'Flatland' was premiered at the Grand Palais as part of Paris Photo Fair in 2018.
In 2023 he published his second book ‘Work - Notes’, a selection of observations from the darkroom available through MMX Gallery, London.
Jackson’s Flatland book, along with a selection of unique luminograms are now held in the collection of The National Gallery of Art in Washington and the collection of the University of Minnesota. His work is exhibited and collected internationally.
